A Stormy Ending

Last Monday evening we had a major storm come across town and in its wake left entire trees laying on the ground, to say nothing of other plants. According to the Weather Service there was a 78mph gust of wind- yikes! No wonder the plants now look like this:

Garden the day after the storm.
Garden the day after the storm.
Garden today.
Garden today.

Today a few of the squash plants still have flowers opening, as you can see in the picture above, so we still might get a few squash before the end of the growing season.

This storm has proven, yet again, how important it is to be prepared for any type of weather at any time. We could see the dark storm cloud coming from a distance, but since the weather service did not say we were going to have a strong storm we did not prepare. The storm didn’t become a strong storm until over town, and by then the wind was so strong we didn’t want to go outside and get pelted with wind and rain.

Since this storm the weather has really cooled off, so I have started covering some ground where we want to grow carrots and lettuce this fall. I am going to use a floating row cover with wood to hold the edges down. There are many different types of row covers you can buy to extend your growing season and save your plants from harsh weather.

Happy Harvesting!
